Introduction

In “Flowers for Algernon” Charlie Gordon undergoes a battery of test that measure both his personality and his intelligence.  Before we read this story, we will try to see how it feels to be tested like Charlie.  These exercises will:

give you a little background knowledge

become familiar with some of the tests Charlie took

help you understand how Charlie felt

determine whether intelligence or personality can truly be

                        measured

The Task

You will need to complete the following tasks:

Open a new Word document and record your answers on that.  You will print it out at the end.

The Process

First, you will need to create a maze. Give it a cool title. Print the maze you have created.  Time yourself as you find your way through your maze.  How did you feel after you completed it?  Was it a difficult maze?

Once you have tested your maze completion skills, you will need to test your personality.  The first personality quiz has to do with color.  What were your results?  In your opinion, was that a fair assessment of your personality?

The next personality quiz also deals with color but in a different way. What are the three words at the top of your results page?  Do these words describe you?

The last personality quiz involves more time.  Was this test more accurate?  Why or why not?  What did your results say?

A man named Hermann Rorschach created a test that was supposed to measure personality traits by a person’s responses to inkblot pictures.  Take this Rorschach test and write down your responses to the 5 inkblots shown.

What do you think Adolph Hitler would have seen?  Mother Teresa?  Hulk Hogan?  Steve Urkel?

Now….

You will need to take the IQ test.  Remember this is just a web test…it is for entertainment purposes only.  It is not completely accurate.  Allow yourself 20 to 25 minutes to take this test. Then answer these questions:

  1. Do you think the questions asked on the test really measure intelligence? Why or why not?
  2. What was your IQ score (this will not be seen by anyone other than the teacher)? Do you feel this is accurate? Why or why not?
  3. How did you feel while you were taking the test? How did you feel after you received your score? (Be specific in your answers.)

Yippee! It’s DOL time!

Copy and paste the following paragraph into your Word document.  Correct all of the errors.  Don’t forget spelling!

                        progris riport 1—martch 5 1965

Dr. Strauss says I shud rite down what I think and evrey thing that happins to me from now on.  I dont know why but he says its importint so they will see if they will use me.  Miss Kinnian says maybe they can make me smart.  I want to be smart.  My name is Charlie Gordon.  I am 37 years old and 2 weeks ago was my birthday.  I have nuthing more to rite now so I will close for today.
